Not pure black, that’s for sure!
Let’s clarify what I mean by pure black. I’m referring to black without any additional hues. You know you are using pure black when the color code is #000000 or rgb (0,0,0).
I’m not opposed to using black and it is a valuable color for most websites. It is useful for contrasting background, text color, borders and many other elements.
What I am opposed to is using a black so dark that it hurts your sales.
You see, pure black is not a natural color. It doesn’t exist in nature other than in an environment with the absence of light. Even the darkest black has a slight hue in it.
Because it is an unnatural color, only to be seen when there is no light or in man-made objects, the brain doesn’t compute this color properly. It creates an extra strain for the user which results in friction.
Will good website colors reduce client friction online?
Friction occurs when an element of your web page makes it more difficult for a visitor to quickly understand what you are trying to convey.
Friction is bad because the harder the experience, the more likely it is that your visitor will bounce and leave, and the less likely they are to purchase from you.
Instead of using pure black, you can opt for a shade of black such as #111111.
